Choosing a Funeral Home Provider
Choosing a Funeral Home
When the time comes to choose a funeral home, it’s best to plan ahead. As with any important financial transaction, it is best done with a clear head and plenty of time to compare funeral prices and all available options. There are many aspects to consider when choosing a funeral home.
Funeral Home Reputation
How well do you know the funeral home? Have you or your family done business with them in the past? If not, don’t be shy about asking for recommendations.
You’ll find that most funeral homes provide excellent, thoughtful services, but it’s reassuring when a trusted friend has had a positive experience, or disinterested third party—someone who doesn’t have ties to the funeral home.
Funeral Home Location
How far away is the funeral home from close family members? Who will be traveling to the gravesite the most? Is the site well maintained and are there extended costs attached to maintenance?
Funeral Home Personnel
How does the funeral home staff respond to your questions? Are they open to carrying out your family’s wishes, or do they try to push you into more expensive services and arrangements?
Caring personnel won’t attempt to use your emotions against you with phrases like, “Of course you only want the best for your loved one, don’t you?” Look for those who explain options to you—fairly and knowledgeably. Consider asking a lawyer, another family member, or a close friend to look over any documents before you sign.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If answers aren’t forthcoming, or answers are deliberately vague, it could be an indicator that it’s time to go elsewhere.
Choosing the right funeral home is important. These are only a few of the options you should consider. Use them to start a conversation with your loved ones now.
