When planning a funeral, it is often difficult to know where to start. As a result, it is important to choose a funeral director, also known as a Mortician, who is proficient in all mortician services. These can include everything from advising on funeral services that meet your budget, to dressing or applying make-up to the deceased, to arranging and directing the entire funeral service.

In order to become a mortician every state requires board licensing. Mortician schools typically consist of mortuary science degrees which may take two to four years to complete, followed by an apprenticeship and examination.

A good funeral director should be more than willing to provide their services in support of funeral services conducted in a church, a home, a funeral home, a grave side or almost anywhere. They do not work 9 to 5 schedules and are trained to deal with stressful situations. A Mortician Services' primary focus is on preparing the body of the deceased and easing the pain of the family during a time of great stress. Together with the family, the funeral director typically plans and confirms the date, time and location for wakes and/or memorial services as well as burial or cremation. The funeral director will make all necessary arrangements for transport of the body and ensuring religious customs are followed.

Other mortician services include working with a family to create an obituary and having it published in the local paper as well as handling paperwork required by the state to ensure the family receives appropriate death certificates and other necessary paperwork.

Although mortician services can be administrative, logistic, religious or legal in nature, the greatest service a good funeral director provides is to help the family through their time of sorrow in planning a funeral service within their budget that respects and honors the deceased while providing comfort and reducing stress to family, friends and other loved ones.
