If you are planning a funeral, whether for yourself or a loved one, you may be trying to find a family funeral home with strong roots in the community.

When it comes to family funeral homes, you will find most of them very proud about their tradition in the community. Many of these family funeral homes have been in the same family for generations!

When planning the funeral with your local family funeral home, be willing to think outside the box to create a personalized service and also to save money. Is it necessary to have a visitation and a graveside service? Could you combine the two services into one? Or perhaps you could have a visitation and service at the same time in the funeral home and have family members only at the grave. Think about what is comfortable for you and your family and don’t be afraid to step outside of the norm.

Family funeral homes love military veterans and are experts at organizing a veterans funeral.  If the deceased was a military veteran or married to one they may qualify for veterans’ funeral benefits. Burial at a veteran’s cemetery is also less expensive than at a public cemetery.

If you, or the deceased, was a member at a local church, they may be able to assist you as well. Many churches have cemeteries on their property but due to space limitations, some churches limit their burial plots to church members and their immediate family.

Your family funeral home can also help you arrange a cremation. In fact, many have crematories on-site. Cremations are typically much less expensive than traditional funerals.

Making decisions following the death of a loved one, or while pre-planning your own funeral arrangements can be difficult and stressful, so selecting a family funeral home that you trust, and feel comfortable working with is an important step that can help you through the funeral planning process.

The family funeral home's relationship with the community is important, especially at a time when you need the comfort and support of friends and loved ones. Quite often, a family owned funeral home has been in business in the same community for decades- and sometimes a hundred years or more!

It is convenient if the family funeral home is in a convenient location. But if the funeral home is in all other aspects perfect, having it be slightly out of the way should not be the determining factor in your choice of funeral homes.
